2008 - A Year of Celebration |
Bright Future |
| Summit, Mississippi, was founded in 1856 by Col. William H. Garland, grand-nephew of the famed patriot Patriot Henry. However, there would have been no Summit had there been no decision to route a major north-south rail connector through the beautiful, hilly, piney forested lands of SW Mississippi. The Historical Society was formed to preserve the homes, buildings, memorabilia and stories of those early settlers. |
This year we celebrated Summit's Sesquicentennial with a series of exciting events planned by the Town's Sesquicentennial Committee. The week of April 13-19, 2008, was brimful with festive activities. Click on the link for a detailed schedule of events which included a parade, town picnic, art show, cemetery and home tours and much more! |
Preservation and restoration are the catchwords for the future of Summit, as members of the Historical Society join with the Town's efforts to become a Certified Local Government, which includes adoption of a preservation ordinance, establishment of a preservation commission and a historic district. The buildings in Summit's downtown area are 100 years old, meriting such efforts; Summit has an incredible inventory of Reconstruction-era homes, ripe for restoration. | |
